Your curriculum program should be tailored to your child's individual learning needs. If your child has any special needs, you can adjust the curriculum to best support their learning.
Your curriculum program must:
Be aligned with the NSW syllabus.
Show how you will meet the outcomes in each subject/KLAs.
List an appropriate amount of resources for each subject/KLAs.
Have an allocated learning time for when you will implement learning.
Have a plan for tracking learning and progress.
Have an allocated learning space to show the AP.
Optional
Write your own Homeschooling Philosophy explaining your learning approach and the strategies you intend to use.
To ensure your homeschooling program aligns with the NSW syllabus, you can simply print the NESA Learning Outcomes and create a checklist. This checklist serves two purposes:
Curriculum Alignment: It helps you ensure your child is learning the essential skills and knowledge outlined in the official NSW syllabus.
Learning Progress Tracking: It allows you to document your child's progress and achievements in each subject/Key Learning Areas (KLAs).
Australian Muslim Homeschooling provides a Free NESA Outcomes checklist to simplify this process.
Homeschooling parents in NSW have a variety of options for documenting their children's learning and progress for NESA. While numerous methods exist, it is not necessary to utilise all of them. Parents can select the approaches that best suit their child's needs and their own teaching style.
Here is a list of some of the options:
1. Learning Report:
Create a Yearly/Termly Report: Outline subjects, comments/observations, and follow up/notes.
2. Documenting Learning Activities:
Learning Journals: Keep a journal for each child, recording daily or weekly activities, observations, and insights.
Work Samples: Collect and organize work samples (written assignments, artwork, projects, presentations, etc.).
Photographs/Videos: Capture photos or videos of learning experiences (experiments, presentations, performances).
Reading Logs: Maintain a record of books read, including summaries or reflections.
3. Tracking Progress:
Checklists: Create checklists based on NESA Learning Outcomes to track your child's progress in each subject.
Portfolio: Create a digital or physical portfolio showcasing your child's learning journey, including work samples and certificates.
4. Other Methods:
Online Learning Platforms: Utilise online learning platforms with built-in progress tracking features.
Field Trip Logs: Document educational field trips, including observations, reflections, and connections to learning.
Correspondence: Keep records of any correspondence with educational institutions (e.g. library visits, online courses).
This graph below provided by NESA illustrates the recommended time allocation for each subject in NSW schools, from Kindergarten to Year 10. While homeschooling families are not obligated to adhere to these specific timeframes, this graph serves as a valuable general guideline and a helpful starting point for parents and caregivers in planning their child's learning.
The graph highlights the importance of certain Key Learning Areas, notably English and Mathematics, which consistently receive the largest portion of allocated time. This reflects their significance as foundational Key Learning Areas (KLAs). The chart below also helps break down the graph by showing the allocated learning time for each stage group.
When creating your educational learning program, you are required to propose an allocated learning time for when you plan to implement teaching and learning throughout the week.
